The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center came alive with music, celebration, and community on Aug. 1 as families gathered for the First Awami Independence Mela, a celebration of Pakistani culture and heritage hosted by the Pakistan Cultural Organization (PCO).
Held in advance of Pakistan’s Independence Day on Aug. 14, the event welcomed visitors of all ages for an evening filled with cultural performances, live music, traditional food, shopping, and community fellowship.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments came during the concert, when audience members illuminated the theater with colorful glow sticks, transforming the auditorium into a sea of lights as they celebrated together.
A Grand Welcome
The evening began with a ceremonial procession led by a live drummer, whose rhythmic performance accompanied organizers and honored guests as they made their entrance into the theater. As they walked through the audience, they paused to greet attendees and wave to the crowd, creating an energetic and welcoming start to the celebration.
Once the procession concluded, the audience settled in for the evening’s stage program, which featured a blend of spoken remarks, musical performances, and cultural presentations throughout the night. One of the evening’s earliest performances featured young dancers with a colorful performance celebrating Pakistani culture.
A Marketplace of Culture
Before and throughout the performances, guests explored a bustling marketplace featuring clothing, jewelry, handcrafted items, and local vendors. Traditional garments in vibrant colors and intricate patterns lined vendor booths, while shoppers browsed jewelry and cultural goods. The marketplace became a gathering place where families visited with friends, discovered local businesses, and celebrated their heritage together.
Food, Music and Community
Outside the venue, food vendors prepared traditional dishes while visitors gathered to enjoy dinner before returning inside for the evening’s performances.
Back inside the theater, vocalists and musicians entertained the audience with performances that kept the celebration going throughout the evening.
Community Leaders Join the Celebration
Several community leaders, elected officials, and political candidates attended the event, recognizing the importance of celebrating the Pakistani community in South Florida. During the program, organizers thanked volunteers and members of the Pakistan Cultural Organization for the work that made the inaugural celebration possible.
